We've worked out a general design for our storybook, which from this
point, I'm going to refer to as backdrops.

We're going to start creating the backdrops, Thursday, Sept 27, at 6:30
pm in the High School Band Room. We need at least 6 people (more is
better) to help with the painting. We'll be tracing the picture onto
the material and then filling in picture. So if you painting skills are
as weak as mine, don't worry - this is just a giant paint-by-numbers!
Anybody can help!

Materials needed: A couple 6-12' ladders for tracing the image,
sharpies, 6" rollers and roller pans/liners, sponges to apply paint, a
few large drop cloths, painters tape. If you can provide any of that,
please bring it up to the school by 6:30.

I'll comment on the design below, but I want to thank everybody for
their willingness to help with this on such short notice. In
particular, thanks to Bev McLinden for her wonderful scene
designs/concepts. Thanks to Gary Bland for offering to build the
rolling carts for the backdrops. Thanks to Judy Case, Pedro & Deb
Cortez, and Mr. Page for their ideas and willingness to step in at last
night's meeting. (I'm missing somebody and I apologize... Memory is
failing me here.)

General design
Rather than a book with turning pages, we are going to have three
separate 14'x10' (height x width) backdrops. The three will be rolled
out stacked, so you can only see the first scene initially. When the
Band moves to the 2nd piece of music, we'll roll the 2nd and 3rd
backdrops stacked over about 10 yards, leaving the first one in the
initial position. And then roll the 3rd out at the 3rd piece of music.
End result will be the three separate backdrops, telling the whole story
of the show.

The backdrops will have pockets on the left, right, and top edges.
We'll run piping of some type (PVC or 1" Standard-40 or the like)
through the pockets to provide the frame of the backdrop. The piping
will be easily disassemble-able, so we can roll up the backdrops for
transportation.

We plan to use duck cloth (heavy drop cloths) for the backdrop 'canvas'.
We'll need some help to cut the canvas and sew the pockets in.
