For those receiving this for the first time, welcome to my monthly update of

others who may be interested or let me know if you would like to be taken
off the mailing list. Others can get on the list by sending me an e-mail.

It doesn't seem possible that school has only been in session for a few
weeks! The buildings are busy as nearly 500 more students made Waukee the
15th largest school district in the state. (We moved past Ottumwa and
Burlington.) We start the year with 5086 students. Our current senior
class of 267 compares to our kindergarten class of 553! What an opportunity
we have to provide the best possible education to our expanding student
base!
With our buildings full, you can see progress being made on the high school
additions and our next elementary school at Maple Grove, both scheduled to
open in the fall of 2007. Details are also being laid out for the final
expansion of the middle school as well as deciding on the location of the
following elementary to open in the fall of 2009.
School Board Elections September 12
Please take time to vote on the 12th as we elect 3 members to the board.
Tracy Lepeltak and Russ Wiesley have served faithfully as incumbents and
have a wealth of expertise. I encourage you to re-elect them. Pat DeMouth
and Doug Haag are also running and have served the district and community in
many ways and will bring professionalism and a fresh perspective to the
board. All four are excellent people who will serve you well if elected.
Also let me thank current board President Embree Edgington for his long
tenure on the board. We will miss the expertise and historical perspective
that he has provided.
Most of this months update is news from our high school activities. It will
tell you that as we enter 4A competition, our students are ready, and will
be competitive. I will try to get reports from each of our other buildings
in time for next months update. I'm sure they will have some interesting
information to share.

The boys varsity cross country team placed third out of 11 schools last week
at the SE.Polk Invitational. Jared Spann led the team with a 4th place

as a team, with Nick McVey and Robbie Allen leading the team.

The high school freshmen football team beat East last night 42-6. The
varsity held their own before losing in a tough opening to the season. If
you didn't attend the game, the stadium was packed. The evening started
with the athletic booster BBQ, and both the dance team and Warrior Regiment
performing at half time. It was easy to see the work that the football
team, cheerleaders, dance squad and band have put in over the last month.
The PTO had a walking taco booth for RAGBRAI and since then have been
selling, at our cost, all of the leftover food items. We still have boxes
of Doritos and bags of shredded cheese.

Are you new to the community or want to find a way to connect with new
friends for you or your children? If you don't have a church home, I
invite you to visit our church home, Lutheran Church of Hope on Ashworth and
Jordan Creek Drive (www.hopewdm.org <http://www.hopewdm.org/> ), or any of
the churches in our community. You will find a friendly smile, a great
message and an invitation to make your life real. Let's fill our churches
as full as our classrooms!
Did you read the article in the Register last month about Pfc. Kenneth
Dickerson, the 19 year old who taught himself Arabic so he could translate
with the Iraqi locals where his company patrolled? The article goes on to
tell the story of the great work he is doing in every way. Another example
of an outstanding graduate from WHS.

Have some news I can share? Just send me a note and I'll be glad to share
it next month.
